The Origin of the Slender Man Legend

The Slender Man is a fictional character that was created as an internet meme in the “Something Awful” forum by Eric Knudsen under the pen name of ‘Victor Surge’ in June 2009. The “Something Awful” website offers a showcase for its users to display paranormal or supernatural characters they have conceived and created. Knudsen’s Slender Man is a thin, white, elongated form of a faceless man who wears a black suit. He was edited into two photographs showing groups of children. In the photographs the Slender Man was positioned off to the side and appeared to be watching the children. Knudsen has stated he based the Slender Man on shadow people and drew inspiration from fictional works of H.P. Lovecraft, Zack Parsons and Stephen King.
